GRANDMOTHER'S SPECIAL COMFORT

IT’S SNOWING AGAIN TODAY.  TRUE TO SOUTHERN TRADITION, DAN LEFT EARLY TO PICK UP PRESCRIPTIONS AT THE DRUG STORE. I REMINDED HIM TO PICK UP EXTRA MILK—JUST IN CASE.  HE RETURNED SHORTLY WITH HIS IDEA OF NECESSARY STAPLES FOR AN IMPENDING WINTER STORM—CHIPS, DIP AND CHOCOLATE.  SO, LET IT SNOW, LET IT SNOW.  ICE, HOWEVER, PLEASE STAY AWAY.  PLEASE!

WE SOUTHERNERS READILY ADMIT WE ARE WIMPS WHEN IT COMES TO WINTER.  WE DO NOT LIKE THE COLD! FOR EXTRA WARMTH WE PULLED OUT A COUPLE OF GRANDMOTHER’S QUILTS FROM STORAGE. I FOUND MYSELF RUNNING MY HANDS OVER THE CAREFULLY STITCHED SQUARES AND SMILING.  I REMEMBER THE SENSE OF COMMUNITY AND FRIENDSHIP AROUND THE QUILTING FRAME.

DAN’S GRANDMOTHER HAD HER SPECIAL QUILTING CLUB.   MANY TALL TALES AND FRIENDSHIPS WERE SPUN.  MY MOTHER IN LAW MARY SPOKE OFTEN OF ONE PARTICULARLY SPECIAL QUILT PASSED DOWN TO HER FROM HER MOTHER IN LAW.  IT WAS A SIGNATURE QUILT WITH ALL THE NAMES OF HER QUILTING CIRCLE OF FRIENDS STITCHED ON IT.

THESE QUILTS MAY NOT BE AS EFFICIENT AS A MODERN ELECTRIC BLANKET OR DOWN COMFORTOR.  HOWEVER, NOTHING COMPARES TO THE LOVE

He will cover you with His feathers and under His wings you will find refuge.  His faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.  Psalm 91:4-5

I think I'm most likely an oddball southener; I like winter! I love snow, cold weather and all the fun that goes with it. I'm not too fond of ice, but it is what it is, as the young folks say!

I love handmade quilts. I have the most precious memories of my Momma, my Maw McDonald and one of my aunts gathering at our house around the quilting frame and stitching the day away. My sisters and I still have quilts made by our Maw. I got my very own, very speical 'wubbie' at last year's scarf sisters reunion; a beautiful hand made lap quilt made and gifted to me by our sister, Becky Mara. It is a treasured possesion!

Enjoy your quilts and stay warm. BTW, your hubby shops like mine did....all the most important food groups are covered! LOL!

Yay for winter storms in the South! lol you are right, we ARE wimps and don't want to venture out of our warm homes during a snow...ice is not nice though and almost more common in the South than snow. We need brownies and popcorn at our house for snow days...I am praying for at least one this year. :) My mother is a quilter as were my grandmother and aunts...I have several treasured quilts and memories of the quilting bee meeting at my Granny's house. My mom has made a quilt for each grandchild, grandchild and another for wedding gifts as the grands got married off. Very special gifts indeed!

I once belonged to a quilting circle, and have completed a few quilts, some by hand. So I do understand what it feels like to work on a quilt together for days and weeks. The sharing of hearts while walking (stitching) together toward a common goal.

Keep warm, dear friend.

I loved this post. Oh, and I love potato chips too!
